Religious liberty under fire in Sri Lanka
December 19, 2011 Recent days have seen the revival of a campaign to ban conversions in Sri Lanka, according to the Fides news agency. In addition, the government’s Ministry of Religious Affairs is ordering the closure of “non-authorized” evangelical Protestant churches and has decreed that the “construction or maintenance of places of worship must have prior approval of the ministry.”
The nation of 21.5 million is 7% Catholic, according to Vatican statistics; almost all Christians there are Catholic. 69% of Sri Lankans are Buddhist, 8% are Muslim, and 7% are Hindu.
