National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) chairman Dr. Natasha Balendra said that she would take steps to introduce a new subject named “Life Skills” and provide sex education needed for the children.

Joining for a discussion with BBC the chairman of the Child Protection Authority said the education ministry and the child protection authority would jointly implement this program.

“About the human body, the nature of the body, protecting the body and sex education needed before adolescence has been included in the subject” she said.

Dr. Natasha Balendran said it is important to provide sex education to children about their body, sexuality and protection to certify their security.

She said the children’s protection cannot be certified only by enforcing the criminal law.

Sexuality and protection
The chairman of the Child Protection Authority said “if we can include this knowledge to the school curriculum we think the child protection can be certified”

The BBC forwarded a question to the chairman whether the current subjects in the school is sufficient to gain a knowledge to the children about the human body and sexuality. Dr. Natasha Balendran said “From grade one, we should be able to develop the child to know about their physical body, life skills, that means how to solve day to day problems, how to understand others problems and to build a positive attitude of facing life” she said.

Dr. Natasha Balendran said “Sometimes children get abused due to physical touching mainly to ignorance”

Parents and children
She said we should raise awareness to the children to understand the connection between their body and harassment during a lonely environment.

“Illiteracy and lack of conversation between parents and children would lead for the children to easily get duped. We advice parents to speak about subjects relating to human body with their children.

Chairman of the Child Protection Authority Natasha Balendran said if we do so the children will confidently able to share their weird experiences with the parents.
