The Sri Lanka Tourism Authority is to investigate allegations that former Economic Affairs Minister Basil Rajapaksa had authorised Rs. 4.7 million to be released by the Authority to use for election campaigning by the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA). Rajapaksa had issued instructions to release the money when he was the Minister, in charge of UPFA election propaganda work during the last Provincial Council Elections.

The former minister had ordered the funds to be released saying it is for Sri Lanka tourism development in the Uva Province.
When contacted, Tourism and Christian Religious Affairs Minister John Amaratunga said an investigation had been launched into how the funds were cleared without following the proper procedures.
