A bad omen for the Hambanthota white tortoises

W.M. Gunathunga of the Hambanthota wildlife security officer said a suspect has been arrested by his office who has taken two white tortoises for the consumption of the Chinese working at the Hambanthota Magampura harbor.

Gunathunga said white tortoises are very highly secured animal species and possessing or killing those are legally prohibited.

 

Recently many people were arrested by the police for catching those white tortoises in the rivers and selling them to the Chinese.

 

Besides that many Chinese nationals were arrested by the police and produced them to the courts for hiding white tortoises in their possession.

 

He said a suspect was caught from Galgamuwa River for catching these white tortoises and produced him before the courts.

 

He said the raid was conducted by the information given by the assistant site security officer Wijeyakumar.
