Govt has 92 ministers

By Saman Indrajith-April 7, 2016

Government yesterday told Parliament that it had 92 cabinet, state and deputy ministers and invited more and more Opposition MPs to join as what was in power was a national government.

Chief Government Whip and Parliamentary Reforms and Mass Media Minister Gayantha Karunatillake said the government had 47 Cabinet ministers including President Maithripala Sirisena, 20 State Ministers and 25 Deputy Ministers.

"There is more room for appointment of new ministers and some other members from the joint opposition have plans to join the government. The government will consider their overtures in the future," Minister Karunathilake said. "The members of the joint opposition could find out to what extent the number of ministers would expand by checking who have plans to join the government side."

"There is room for expansion as this is a national government", Minister Karunathilake added.

He made these observations yesterday when Opposition Member Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena questioned who would reveal the statistics in relation to the number of ministers as promised by the government on Wednesday.
