The Cage tells the horrifying story of the final months of the war in Sri Lanka, which ended with the defeat of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in May 2009.
Gordon Weiss, the former United Nations spokesperson in Sri Lanka, says the war ended in a "bloodbath", including the "wholesale bombardment by government forces of unarmed civilians".
The LTTE fought for more than 30 years for an independent Tamil state in the north and east of the island of Sri Lanka. At its height, the LTTE controlled almost a third of the territory of the island.

Tamils for Obama has been passing around DVDs of UK Channel 4’s documentary “Sri Lanka’s Killing Fields.” The Tamil group expects that increased viewing of this story of Sri Lankan horrors will bring greater awareness and sympathy to their movement. They also expect that the DVD will generate chatter among the Congress people to whom they’ve delivered it, and that President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton will want to know what the chatter is about, and so Tamils for Obama is sending copies of the DVD to Obama and Clinton. THUNUKKAI, Sri Lanka, Jul 25, 2011 (IPS) - If voters in this remote village, deep inside Sri Lanka’s former war zone, turned out in strength for the historical Jul. 23 local body elections, it had to do with the availability of buses to ferry them to the nearest polling station 20 km away.
Election monitors feared that the villagers of Thunukkai would not take the trouble to travel 40 km to cast their votes, even if local body elections were being held after a gap of 25 years. MORE >>
