Sri Lanka: Tamil Politics and the Quest for a Political Solution

The Agenda has done several on-air and online segments about Sri Lanka. The country suffered from a brutal, decades-long civil war driven by ethnic conflict between the majority Sinhalese and the minority Tamil populations.

The war ended in 2009. But while the Sri Lankan government tries to put on as positive a face as possible, many unresolved issues remain between the island’s Sinhalese and Tamils.

International Crisis Group has just published a report, “Sri Lanka: Tamil Politics and the Quest for a Political Solution.” It looks into how well both the government and Tamil opposition politicians have done in trying to resolve differences in the aftermath of the war. And it offers advice on what the government, Tamil leaders, the international community, and the large Tamil diaspora outside Sri Lanka should do to move the yardsticks forward on a long-term solution to the Sinhalese-Tamil question.
