in Sinhala Buddhist society illustrates the strength of this top down
cultural ideology – an ancient symbolism that continues to sway the
masses in this land. It is a power that is overwhelming in terms of the
strength of the ideas, concepts and myths which have been appropriated
by those in power in Sinhala Buddhist society.

Dambulla Cave Temple. The message is crystal clear. The King as
protector of the Sasana stands close to the Buddha within the spiritual
hierarchy. Those who worship the Buddha do in fact worship the king by
implication. This is secular colonization of the image of Buddha.]
