A Sports and Physical Science Lecturer attached to the Karapitiya Medical Faculty (KMF), which is affiliated to the University of Ruhuna, was recently arrested by the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) for allegedly coaxing minors to perform lewd acts by befriending them on Facebook.
The suspect is a 55-year-old resident of Matara and a father of two.
Meanwhile, a 39-year-old resident of Panadura, a surveyor by profession, was arrested by the NCPA's Cyber Watch Unit (CWU) on Wednesday (23) on similar charges.
The two suspects are currently in remand custody.
Also, in the recent past, two suspects, one a 28-year-old estate field officer employed at Kurunegala and the other a 40-year-old computer instructor from Mirigama, were also arrested on similar charges, NCPA Chairperson, Anoma Dissanayake, told Ceylon Today.
According to the NCPA, the suspects will be charged for soliciting and aiding minors to perform lewd acts, which carry a minimum 10-year prison sentence.
Dissanayake said the NCPA's CWU had monitored the activities of the lecturer and the Panadura resident over a period of time and had lured them by using an undercover agent.
"The NCPA has arrested these suspects who were abusing minors through the internet. They are professionals. There is an escalation in the number of complaints the NCPA has received regarding the abuse of minors via the internet," she added.
Dissanayake further said, "A child should be constantly monitored when using the internet. If not, they will easily fall prey to such persons."
