Tamil protestors in Puthukkudiyiruppu managed to deter Sri Lankan
military surveyors from acquiring a tranche of privately owned land on
Wednesday.
Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Defence has been demanding the Tamil
villagers hand over the deeds to 38 acres of land, which is situated by
the Puthukkudiyiruppu provincial secretariat, stated protestors.
The land is currently legally owned by 42 different villagers, yet
since the end of the armed conflict in 2009 the Sri Lankan military has
set up an army camp in the area.
Field officers from Sri Lanka’s survey department accompanied by
security forces personnel attempted to inspect the area on Wednesday to
permanently occupying the land, said protestors.
