Despite worldwide condemnations against the violence unleashed on the Rohingya people including women and children, a senior official attached to Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Women’s Affairs has openly expressed her support to the ongoing violence by sharing memes on her personal Facebook page.
Just hours after thugs and monks stormed the UN safe house in Mount Lavinia, (Ms.) Ashoka Alawatte, the Additional Secretary (Development) at the Ministry of Women’s Affairs has shared a meme which shows Aung San Suu Kyi, the head of Myanmar’s government saying she will not bow down her head to international pressure and she will defeat Rohingya terrorism. The meme in Sinhalese also goes on to approve the ongoing carnage saying; “here’s a real woman, who is better than a thousand spineless men.”
A Facebook user who saw the post expressed his shock, saying that this was highly unbecoming from a government official and that too from a woman who is attached to the women’s affairs ministry, who is openly supporting the killings of women and children in Myanmar.
Meanwhile, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) today expressed its concern and alarm at yesterday’s incident at the refugee shelter which housed mostly women and children.
Meanwhile there has been no official statement or condemnation from the government even though it has been over 24 hours since the incident in Mount Lavinia took place. However, Finance Minister Managala Samaraweera and Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne had condemned the incident on a personal capacity. Sagala Ratnayaka, the minister of law and order is yet to issue a statement on the incident. Despite the lawlessness by the monks and the thugs, the police yesterday did not arrest a single monk or thug for their unruly behavior.
