Heavy rainfall brings flooding and disruption to Jaffna

As Cyclone Burevi continues to ravage coastal areas of the North-East and Tamil Nadu, a torrential rainfall yesterday deluged the city of Jaffna, blocking movement and causing severe damages to residential areas and businesses.

A great number of houses, businesses and farmlands located at a low altitude have already submerged under water as a result of heavy downpours throughout the week.

As the rain shows no signs of abating, it is feared that it will bring far more destruction in its wake.

The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) had earlier announced that as of Saturday around 70,000 people have been affected by the Cyclone Burevi.

While estimates reveal around 55,000 of them are from Jaffna, the heavy rainfall that poured yesterday is expected to displace many more. It is also expected that the number of affected would rise to over 100,000 people.
