Sri Lanka: ITSSL chair detained for stating that Government web sites were hacked.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) arrested Chairman of the Information Technology Society of Sri Lanka (ITSSL) Rajeev Yasiru Kuruwitage Mathew for sharing false news claiming several government web sites, including the Presidential Secretariat web site, were hacked, police said.

Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said the suspect had issued statements since last week stating websites of the Presidential Secretariat, External Affairs Ministry, Medical Research Institute, Survey Department of Sri Lanka have been subject to a massive cyber attack.

According to the news, the ITSSL Chairman had informed the relevant authorities to take appropriate measures to prevent such attacks, but they had failed.

Yesterday, the CID arrested a 23-year-old man for publishing the fake notice.

He was arrested for violating the Computer Crimes Act and will appear before the Colombo Chief Magistrates’ Court today.
