According to the Kathimerini newspaper, US officials have requested the transfer of Russian-made weapons from the Cyprus’ inventory to Ukraine during meetings with representatives of Cyprus.

It is stated that the proposal was positively accepted by the head of Cyprus Nikos Anastasiadis. The news reports that the talks will move to an advanced level. This means that Cyprus, a refuge for Russian oligarchs, will no longer pursue a policy of neutrality in the war.

Which systems are on the delivery agenda?

A New York Times report last week said that allies of the Biden administration had been asked to deliver Soviet-made weapons to their inventory in Ukraine.

According to Kathimerini’s sources, the Americans are particularly interested in Cyprus’ air defense systems and attack helicopters. These systems include the TOR-M1 and Buk-M2 air defense systems, the T-80U tanks, the BMP3 armored combat vehicle, and the Mi-35 attack helicopters.

If these weapons are delivered to Ukraine, Cyprus is expected to deliver their American equivalents. Such a scenario, on the other hand, is well suited to new tensions between Turkey and the United States.
