Protestors in Mullaitivu demanded a new federal constitution for Sri Lanka which devolved power to the North-East, in a rally that called for the president and prime minister to resign today.

Hundreds of Tamils marched in Mulliyawalai alongside local political figures, in the demonstration organised by the Vanni Development Council.

As well as calling for the resignation of Sri Lanka’s ruling Rajapaksa regime, the protestors also called for a “democratic, socialist federal constitution”.

A protest was also held in Vavuniya earlier today, where locals denounced the rapidly rising prices of basic goods such as cooking gas and bread.

Posters were also seen in Jaffna last night calling for the Rajapaksas to resign.

As demonstrations continue across the South of the island, Tamil parliamentarians and activists have been vocal about ensuring any changes in Colombo includes a power sharing mechanism to the Tamil North-East.
