A powerful earthquake in Afghanistan has killed at least 1,000
people and left 1,500 more injured in a hard-to-access region in the east of the country.

The 6.1 magnitude tremor, which is thought to have damaged some 1,800 homes, comes as Afghanistan is already struggling to deal with recent floods, a desperate economic crisis and a healthcare system already on the brink of collapse.
