Nallur Pradeshiya Sabha praises Canadian parliament for Tamil genocide remembrance

21 June 2022

The Nallur Pradeshiya Sabha in Jaffna has passed a resolution welcoming the Canandian parliament motion recognising May 18 as Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day - a landmark move that made it the first parliament in the world to recognise the Tamil genocide.

A Madhusudhan, a member of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), moved a resolution that welcomed the Canadian parliament move and condemned Sri Lanka’s genocide of Tamils.

The Canadian parliament motion, which was passed unanimously last month, states that "this House acknowledges the Genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka, and recognizes May 18th of each year as Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day".

The motion has been widely welcomed by Tamils across the globe, including families of the disappeared, Tamil parliamentarians and even a US Congresswoman.

The Sri Lankan government meanwhile ‘categorically ‘rejected the motion.
