SJB, JVP-led NPP boycott Parliament this week claiming govt. impotence
By Saman Indrajith-2022/06/22
The SJB and the JVP-led NPP yesterday announced that they would boycott Parliament this week. They accused the government of not making use of House sittings to find solutions for the problems faced by the people.
Opposition and SJB Leader Sajith Premadasa said that his party would boycott the week’s Parliament proceedings to show its displeasure at the government. He called the government a bunch of thieves, who kept lying to people. When the Opposition voiced the people’s problems in the House they were silenced by the crony MPs who support the government.
The SJB also decided to boycott Parliament proceedings over the government’s conduct.
The JVP-led NPP said that the Parliament proceedings held thus far had not benefited the people.
JVP leader MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake said Parliament ignored the voice of the public.
Claiming that the President was unfit to govern the country as he had failed to take responsibility for the difficulties faced by the public, MP Dissanayake said it was only reasonable and understandable for the public to stage protests calling for his resignation.
Dissanayake said it had also been proved that the Prime Minister and the government had also failed as even after nearly a month since their appointment they were unable to resolve the crises in the country.
MP Dissanayake said thereby, the Opposition parties had requested the government to submit a short-term plan on the measures taken to address the crises and such time, the opposition would boycott Parliament proceedings.
NFF leader Wimal Weerawansa said the SLPP dissident group was of the view that the government had failed, but it would not boycott Parliament, where issues troubling the public could be taken up for discussion.
