Wind up stir on Lanka issue, Narayanasamy tells students

28th March 2013
The New Indian ExpressUnion Minister of State for the PMO, V Narayanasamy,  on Wednesday, said that the Sri Lankan High Commissioner should function within the frame work of his powers and should inform his views to the Government of India.
He was responding to reporters’ queries at a press conference on the reported e-mails from Lankan High Commissioner to India seeking support for Sinhaleese here on Wednesday. The Union Minster said he did not know the full details about the e-mails.
Earlier, Narayanasamy asked students to withdraw the agitation over the Lankan Tamils issue as the Centre was doing everything possible for the Tamils in the island nation.
He said India had supported the US-backed resolution in the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and also came up with its own amendments urging the Lankan government to implement the rehabilitation and devolution of powers.
Asked about the demand for separate Tamil Eelam, he raised a counter question: “What would be the stance of India if Pakistan raises a demand for a separate country in Jammu and Kashmir at the United Nations?”
He also said that many of the political parties, at the all-party meeting, did not support the decision to bring in a resolution against Sri Lanka in Parliament.
To another query on DMK withdrawing its support to the UPA, he said the Congress had the numbers with the support of parties like BSP and SP and would complete its tenure.
Even the DMK had resolved in its executive committee meeting that they would not pull down the UPA government, he said and added that the Congress-led UPA would win the 2014 elections and form the government at the Centre.
To meet Shinde on ashram attack
Earlier, referring to issue of attack on the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, the Union Minister charged that Puducherry police remained as mere spectators when the miscreants, in the guise of students, attacked the Ashram at the instigation of Chief Minister N Rangasamy.
He claimed that the very same people were involved in the attack on his camp office as police had released them after a preventive custody.
“Everybody has the right to agitate, but taking law into their hands and indulging in violence should not be tolerated,” he added.
Stating that such incidents repeated themselves because of the intervention of the N R Congress government and the inaction of the police, Narayansamy said that he would meet Union Home Minister and demand a judicial probe into the attack on Ashram and his office.
He said he never denounced the agitation by the students on the Sri Lankan issue but condemned the anti-social elements who burned the effigy of Congress chairperson Sonia Gandhi in the guise of students.
