By Niranjala Ariyawansha-May 24, 2014

Ven. Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thera and the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) are expected to hold a meeting in Colombo on Monday, 26 May, JHU National Organizer and Western Provincial Council member, Nishantha Sri Warnasinghe told Ceylon Today.

"As the Convener of the National Movement for Social Justice (NMSJ), Sobhitha Thera invited us for a discussion. We accepted the invitation. The NMSJ sent us several proposals. Through this discussion we hope we can come to an agreement with regard to the proposals. We also expect to discuss the current political situation at the meeting," said Warnasinghe. The venue for the event, however, was not finalized by the time this edition went to print.

Representing the JHU, Party General Secretary, Minister Champika Ranawaka, Legal Adviser Udaya Gammanpila, Parliamentary Group Leader Athuraliye Rathana Thera and Warnasinghe will take part in the discussion with Sobhitha Thera.

Several parties have proposed Sobhitha Thera's name as a possible common Opposition candidate for a future presidential election. In the meantime, NMSJ has put forward several proposals such as reintroducing the 17th Amendment to the Constitution and abolishing the Executive Presidency. Thus far, they have held discussions on their proposals with several political parties such as the UNP, JVP, civil society organizations and the Bar Association of Sri Lanka.
