Corbyn launches initiative on human rights and self-determination

13 December 2020

The former leader of the British Labour Party Jeremy Corbyn announced the launch of a new initiative that brings together “academics and researchers, leaders and campaigners, and grassroots people and organisations” to work on a range of issues, including on self-determination, democracy and independence, in places such as Sri Lanka.

Announcing the launch of the Peace and Justice Project, Corbyn said the initiative is “there to create space, hope and opportunity for those campaigning for social justice and a future that works for the many, not the few”.

“We will work with unions and social movements to build a network of campaigners, grassroots activists, thinkers and leaders, to share experiences and generate ideas about solutions to our common problems,” he added. “We will combine research and analysis with campaigning and organising.”

The new will work on issues of “global cooperation and international peace” as well as “colonialism, self-determination, democracy and independence”.

“We support movements for democracy and people’s right to self-determination across the world including in Palestine and the Middle East, Sri Lanka, Kashmir, and Latin America,” said the project.

Corbyn has been a long standing supporter of the Tamil right to self-determination. Writing in the Tamil Guardian on November 27th 2019, he said “I know you won’t give up until justice is done, and I won’t either”. “And as I have long said, the right of Tamils to determine their own future is central to this.”
